Rootabaga Country is an opera for children based on selections from Carl Sandburg's 1922 collection, Rootabaga Stories. The opera is about two siblings, Please Gimme and Ax Me No Questions, who travel with their father, Gimme the Ax, to Rootabaga Country on the Zigzag Railroad to learn more about their mother, Alelia, who disappeared when they were young. Along the way, they learn that families can come in all shapes and sizes and that the best way forward is together.
