Safe Space
When their group therapy ends prematurely, eight girls say goodbye with a “safe space” slumber party, only to find they have unfinished business with each other. To celebrate their two years together they host a no holds barred “safe space” slumber party and it quickly becomes evident the therapy is ending at pivotal moments in each of these girls’ lives. Even for one night they cannot stop the outside forces that shape who they are: opioids, mental illness, slut shaming, and an inadequate foster system. These girls try to work together to shoulder the burden of living in a world where suddenly, there are no “safe spaces.” Featuring an ensemble of 8 female actors, Safe Space is a positive statement about the brutal reality of the world. Emerging from a high stakes backdrop, these brave middle schoolers still find magic and joy and greet their problems with a smile and a meme.

The Process
Nine people took a 90-minute script and over six days changed roughly 40% of it's content to tell a more detailed story. The beauty of theatre is that it is uncontrollably multi-perspective and "Safe Space" seeks to use that as an advantage to tell a more authentic American story
Meet the Girls
Each girl speaks roughly the same time on stage (between 95-125 lines), each with their own story arc, struggles, and personality. “Safe Space” shows the audience that there is no “one type” of girl that receives this type of abuse, but more of a problem of how we treat girls on a whole. With an upbeat tone, “Safe Space” tackle the bigger problems teens face, and tells an unforgettable story that challenges concepts of love, trauma and sisterhood.

A Community Driven Piece
Annex Theatre is teaming up with Peace in the Streets, and The Treehouse Foundation to raise goods and money that could donated to homeless or foster youth. On 2/18/2018 Annex will host a matinee purely for those affected. The set is Eco-conscious and all of it will be recycled or re-purposed. For more details follow their facebook page.

New work. New theatre.
